Afropunk

A platform for black culture and diversity that intertwines music, art and community connections.
Through concerts, artistic interventions, film screenings, reverberating debates and exhibitions that exalt black entrepreneurs, AFROPUNK has become a global powerhouse.

Spreading its essence around the world, it is both a content interface with global reach and a festival that reverberates in metropolises such as Brooklyn, Paris, Johannesburg, London and Atlanta.

In Brazil, it is preparing to hold its fourth edition in the blackest city outside Africa, which stands out as one of the world’s prominent cultural epicenters, especially in the spheres of music, art and gastronomy: Salvador, November 9 and 10.

CARNAVAL 2024

Psirico, Notting Hill Carnival, Larissa Luz, Vandal and Lunna Montty. The combination that only AFROPUNK could make at the biggest street party in the world. The #TrioAFROPUNK brought a mixture of rhythms, colors and traditions to the Barra-Ondina Circuit. In the unprecedented encounter between Salvador Carnival and Notting Hill Carnival, we witnessed a fusion of cultures that transcends geographical boundaries. A true epicenter of musical souls, leaving an unforgettable mark on the soundscape of Salvador Carnival.

AFROPUNK 2023

The world met in Salvador and Brazil once again saw itself through new lenses at AFROPUNK 2023. Lenses that catapult black artists into the spotlight that has always been theirs by right, that mobilize creatives from all over the country to the blackest city outside Africa. Lenses capable, in two days of celebration, reunion and recovery, of attesting to the strength and uniqueness of the hours of utopia that shape AFROPUNK.

AFROPUNK 2021

As a long-planned festival, interrupted by a pandemic and still being born in a context that inspired caution, AFROPUNK Bahia was initially conceived in a 100% digital format. But beyond a broadcast show or recorded content, we wanted more. We wanted a new movement to emerge. The format changed during the collective construction, with the permissible releases, but the objective remained the same: to take the message to the entire diaspora, to gather and celebrate.

AFROPUNK Miami BLack Spring 2021

Still in a pandemic context, AFROPUNK created spaces for black liberation and celebration. Inspired by new beginnings and the change of seasons, the digital festival brought a reimagining of Afro-diasporic unity celebrating Afro-Latino, Afro-Caribbean and Afro-descendant communities. We brought Brazil to the digital gathering through the Brazilian talents Seu Jorge, Jup do Bairro, Black Pantera; and Luedji Luna in the special edition of Tiny Desk NPR, in partnership with AFROPUNK, to open the event.

Carnival 2020

The biggest black culture festival in the world at the biggest street party.

The AFROPUNK trio without strings is an energetic epicenter. It’s our roda without strings, our spin on the streets of Salvador, the representation of culture in its natural space, it’s occupation.

In 2019, O AFROPUNK landed at the Salvador Carnival on board the Pirate Ship – BaianaSystem’s emblematic trio, on the Saturday and Sunday of the revelry, without ropes. The public was able to see the historic performances of Mano Brown and Afrocidade, who, for the first time, pulled a trio. Other artists who navigated the two days of intense emotions were Cronista do Morro, Afro Jhow, Vandal, BNegão and Iracema Killiane.

History of AFROPUNK

For 20 years, AFROPUNK has been an Afrofuturist icon for generations. Consistent, credible work underpins our immense cultural relevance.

The largest black culture festival in the world brings together the most diverse forms of cultural expression from the African diaspora – flooded with attitude, resistance and power – and its mission is to build spaces for redemption, dialog, reconstruction and revolution.

It was born as a manifesto, in the form of a documentary, which addressed black loneliness in the punk scene, racism, white privilege and the need for unity:
It became a festival, expanded its possibilities to encompass new musical genres – always with a Line Up of renowned black music artists and new talents. But far beyond a festival, AFROPUNK is the public, it’s attitude, it’s change, it’s celebration.
